DICE Details Battlefield 3 Social Network, Battlelog

By Mike Sharkey[/URL] | Jul 20, 2011

Studio breaks down the social and stat tracking features Battlelog will provide.

Looks like those leaked images of DICE's new Battlefield 3 social network, Battlelog, were the real deal. The studio began providing details about Battelog today, including a screenshot that looks very familiar.

In an interview on the official Battlefield blog, producer Fredrik Loving describes some of the key features that are being implemented for Battlelog. And for the most part, it's exactly what you'd expect: detailed stat tracking combined with social networking.

"We want to make Battlefield 3 a more social gaming experience and it all starts with Battlelog," sLoving said. "We are changing how players communicate, play, compete and share content with their friends, extending the in-game experience to be accessible from your home computer, on your handheld devices while commuting, or wherever you may be."

One of the two key components of Battlelog is the Battlefeed, the Battlelog homepage where players can see what's happening among their Battlefield 3 friends in real time, and send and receive messages and invites.

The second component is a full-featured soldier progression section, which tracks every round, every action, and every shot fired in a player's Battlefield career. "Battlefield players love their statistics," Loving said. "Now we will give them everything that they want while adding a social layer on top of that."

Battlelog is set to launch alongside Battlefield 3 on October 25. DICE said more details on the free service are coming soon.

Sharkey says: I'm definitely a stat junkie and enjoy any and all details a game can provide on my performance. But I've got to say, thanks to Activision making a big deal of Call of Duty: Elite, this whole gaming social service has become overblown. Bungie has been doing this stuff for years with Halo -- for free. I'm just glad DICE and EA aren't putting a price tag on their service.
